Nationally commissioned
Independent organisations in England providing NHS health and social care nationally will be eligible to apply via this process.
If you think your organisation qualifies (or if you have any questions about your eligibility to use NHSmail), then please:
- Read and sign the NHSmail Access Process Document
- Raise a case via the NHS England National Service Customer Portal and attach the completed form to the request
The basis on which staff working in a non-NHS organisation can be granted access to the NHSmail service is contained in the NHSmail Access Policy.
Independent providers are required to have MFA on all their NHSmail accounts.
Locally commissioned
If your organisation has been commissioned locally and the commissioning organisation have stipulated the need for NHSmail, they should provide you with sponsor email accounts for the duration of your contract with them. This applies to those commissioned by an Integrated Care Board (ICB) or NHS Trust.
If you only require NHSmail for sending secure email, options are available to achieve secure email transit:
• Accrediting your own email solution to the DCB1596 secure email standard
• Review the use of Egress to enable secure communication between NHSmail users and external organisations (NHSmail encryption guide)
Private entities
Independent organisations that are funded privately and do not provide patient facing care, will not be eligible to join NHSmail. PLC/commercial organisations that have their own email domains, and meet the below scope will be required to attain DCB1596 accreditation to deliver email securely as they not eligible for publicly funded licences.
Emails sent to and from health and social care organisations must meet the secure email standard (DCB1596) so that everyone can be sure that sensitive and confidential information is kept secure.
