Issue Description: Some users may be unable to search for content in SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Outlook on the web, or Outlook desktop.

Final Update: 21/08/2026 09:26:00 AM – Microsoft has completed deploying the fix to reduce the resource pressure, and they have validated by monitoring internal telemetry that the issue is resolved.

Scope of impact: Impact was specific to some users served through the affected infrastructure who were attempting to search for content in SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Outlook on the web, or Outlook desktop.

Root cause: A recent deployment introduced a resource utilization inefficiency issue and affected the search functionality in SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Outlook on the web, and the Outlook desktop client.

Next steps: Microsoft is further reviewing the recent deployment to understand how the resource utilization inefficiency issue was introduced, and to understand what prevented it from being detected in their update testing and validation procedures, which will allow them to prevent similar issues in future deployments.
