NHSmail Reference: INC46660005
Microsoft Reference: SP1171428
Issue Status: RESOLVED
Issue Description: Some users are intermittently unable to view search results in SharePoint Online and are returned an error.
More info: This specifically impacts users of Representational State Transfer (REST) search API to load SharePoint Online search results. Users also report intermittent impact to Graph API search queries in SharePoint Online.
Affected users are returned a 500 “Internal Server Error” when attempting to search SharePoint Online.
Search results that do succeed may take over 20 seconds to load.
Final Update: 24/10/2025 08:39:00 AM – After observing consistent availability during an extended period of monitoring service health telemetry through peak traffic hours, Microsoft have confirmed the impact has been totally remediated.
Scope of impact: Your organization is affected by this event, and users leveraging the REST search API attempting to view search results in SharePoint Online are intermittently impacted and are returned a 500 “Internal Server Error”.
Root cause: An automatic memory management process that reclaims memory occupied by objects that are no longer in use, is producing delays.
Next Steps: Microsoft are continuing their analysis of the automatic memory management process to deepen our understanding of how the delays were being produced so they can identify and address any further deficiencies to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
