Issue Status: RESOLVED

Issue Description: Some users incorrectly receive a security warning prompt when opening Excel or PowerPoint files in SharePoint Online.

More info: More specifically, users may have incorrectly received a security prompt when opening Word, Excel or PowerPoint files in their respective web apps within SharePoint Online. Also, affected users may have seen the following message “This content presents a potential issue”.

Final Update: 21/08/2024 10:03:00 AM – Microsoft have confirmed that the fix has completed deployment to the impacted infrastructure and validated remediation with affected users.

Scope of impact: Impact was specific to some users who were served through the affected infrastructure, attempting to open Word, Excel or PowerPoint files in their respective SharePoint Online web app.

Root cause: A necessary short-term fix for an unrelated issue was recently implemented, producing a security warning prompt when opening Excel, PowerPoint, or Word files in SharePoint Online.

Next steps : Microsoft are continuing our analysis of the initial short-term fix to determine if similar warnings can be prevented or bypassed for similar impacting events going forward.
